Learning Uganda Sign language to go Digital
Tuesday 28th February, 2017: Kampala – Doctors, teachers, nurses, lawyers and other service providers who have always found it hard interacting with Deaf persons should finally smile, Uganda sign language is soon going to be available in digital formats and learners will be able to learn sign language at a tap of a button while on their office computer or at home on their smart-phones.
Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) an umbrella organization of Deaf persons in Uganda has partnered the Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions (SPIDER) an organisation within the Department of Computer and System Sciences of Stockholm University- Sweden to make Uganda Sign Language learning accessible via digital platforms for Deaf people, their families, social service provides and anyone willing to learn Uganda Sign Language access the tutorials with ease.

As Deaf people globally watch the turn of events with seemingly little curiosity due to limited involvement in the process that was characteristic of wide consultation involving key stakeholders Eroku Simon who has been part of the 3 year long journey takes you through the SDGs, giving an insight of what Deaf people need to stand up for.

Technology is a style in life where things move with creativity and innovation, UNAD has come this far and today, we have to ensure that technology dominates our service delivery platforms, we have to make sure that it is the one reason we can reach out for greatness and make even a more bigger impact and picture of Dignity for Deaf persons in Uganda that’s one reason why this site has been developed.
Who we are
Uganda National Association of the Deaf (UNAD) is a non government and voluntary organization bringing together all categories of Deaf persons in Uganda including those with multiple disabilities like Deaf-Blind persons. Formed in 1973, UNAD was registered as Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in 1989. It is a national umbrella organization for all grass root associations of Deaf persons in Uganda. UNAD is consulted by the government and NGOs on matters concerning Deaf persons and Deafness. UNAD is affiliated to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) which has a consultative status with the UN.
UNAD’s primary task is to advocate for the promotion and protection of rights of Deaf persons with a vision of dignified lives of all Deaf persons in Uganda. UNAD is managed by a board of directors elected by general assembly every five years. UNAD board of directors is composed of nine persons representing the following regions and special interest groups; Western, South-west, Eastern, Central, Northern, Karamoja, WestNile, Youth, and Female representative. UNAD has 20 full time staff members both at head office and in the field braches in Mbarara and Kyegegwa districts.
